We recently celebrated our one year anniversary and decided that Chicago was going to be our location of choice. We were there for 4 days and had a blast.
I think October is a great time to visit - not many tourists and the weather is still decent. We arrived early Saturday morning and got to our hotel way before checkin time, but they let us check in early and had a room ready within 2 hours. We stayed at the Intercontinental Chicago. I would highly recommend this hotel - it's right on the Miracle Mile and within walking distance to a lot of great places.
On our actual anniversary, we went for a historic walking tour of Wrigley Field (my husband loves baseball) and had a great time. We then went to Gibsons Steakhouse for dinner - it was a bit pricey but the food was decent. After that, we went up the Hancock Tower, to the signature lounge, for drinks. It was AMAZING. The service wasn't all that great but the view was awesome - it was clear and dark outside so it was like a beautiful light show. I couldn't think of a better way to spend our anniversary.
While there we also checked out Millennium Park, Navy Pier (overrated and a serious "tourist trap"), among other places.
Some of the best Italian food we had there was at a place called Tuscany on Taylor. It was a bit of a cab ride to get there (it seemed to be in the suburbs) but it was well worth it. The food tasted homemade and was perfect. They served roasted garlic with some bread almost as soon as we sat down - we asked for the hot pepper paste with it (it's not on the menu) and it added a nice kick. I highly recommend visiting that restaurant!
We, of course, also tried out some original deep dish pizza... which is where we learned that we both seriously dislike deep dish pizza. The place we went to was supposed to be one of the best in Chicago and although the service was great, the pizza wasn't. BUT, if you like deep dish, I'm sure you'd love it.
All in all, we loved Chicago. It's an amazing city and we will definitely go back.
